I feel like the best holiday traditions are the ones that happen naturally. You don't plan them and they aren't necessarily the same ones you grew up with. It starts off as something small until you realize that, after 7 years, you are doing the same thing. Our little family has an Easter Tradition that I've grown quite fond of.
First, let me explain that Easter may be my absolute favorite holiday. There are several reasons for this. Primarily, as a Christian, this is the day we celebrate the most amazing and critical miracle. Because of the spiritual nature of this day, it has remained a holiday not intended to be self-focused, but God focused. Also, unlike many other holidays, people don't stress out as much. No need to worry about decorating your house or buying and shipping an obscene amount of presents. A day when people don there Sunday's Best and enjoy their family. Oh. And Brent shaves. One of the rare occasions the razor is used on a weekend. Can I get an Amen?
Several years ago, while we were still in college, some sweet friends of ours invited us over for Easter dinner. These ladies prepared one of the loveliest meals I've ever had. It was beautiful, delicious and elegant. The following year, as a newlywed, I felt the need to prove myself as a worthy wife and hostess. Fortunately for me, I had friends to help in the endeavor. We invited a group of people for my first dinner party; complete with menus, place settings and several courses. And so the tradition began. For the next few years we would host a small gathering of 10 - 15 people with lots of food. My friends and I used this as an opportunity to display our culinary development and skills. Even now as I write this it makes me smile to think of all of the wonderful food prepared and conversations shared. Another reason that Easter is such a special holiday!
This year is the first year that we won't be following our family tradition. The dinner will not be served in courses, nor will it be fancy by any means. This is the first time I've prepared anything out of a box on such an occasion! Still, this doesn't mean Easter won't be special. Tonight's "feast" will be enjoyed by a group of men who, far from home and families, will still be able to celebrate the day as though they were not on the opposite side of the world. I feel incredibly fortunate to be able to bless these fellows with a simple meal and an open door.
If I had to choose between the prime rib, goat cheese and herb mashed potatoes and made from scratch lemon chiffon pie, or tonight's festivities with my family and friends - I would choose this. Easily. Every time.
Happiest Easter to you all!
