His Blankie: Soft and Blue

I've had this idea rolling around in my mind for awhile. This is not the "typical" blog post either. It's a story I wrote for Michael and his Blue Blanket... It's also currently untitled - any suggestions?

A woman and her husband prayed
kneeling on the ground,
over the life growing inside her
making her belly round.
The day came when she first held
that precious baby boy.
Bringing with him to the world
indescribable love and joy.

At first the nights were long
and the days were too.
The mom would gently wrap and rock him
in his blankie soft and blue.
Many times with prayer and kisses
their baby she would cover,
along with his blanket and the powerful
love of a mother.

And as the baby got bigger
she didn't rock him quite as much.
But when he held his blanket,
he could feel his mother's touch.
Soon it helped him fall asleep
and as the baby grew,
he learned to cherish this magical thing:
his blankie, soft and blue.

Yes, the blanket helped him sleep,
but its powers didn't stop there...
along with mom's chicken soup,
it was also the best cold care.
And even when a thunderstorm raged
as they often do,
the boy was not afraid snuggled under the shelter
of his blankie soft and blue.

The magic lasted through the night
and carried into day.
It morphed into a superhero cape
making him strong and brave.
He fought evil knights by day
and would slay bad dragons too,
and still each night he'd fall asleep,
with his blankie, soft and blue.

One day daddy said:
"I've got to go for awhile, to a distant land.
I'm a soldier you see and my family and country
I've vowed to defend.
While I'm gone, you're the man of the house,
just as I have been.
So love and help your mommy and before you know
I'll be back home again."

"Mommy," the boy said one day,
"I sure do miss my dad!
Let's think of some ways to show him love,
then we won't feel so sad."
They filled a large care package
with things he would enjoy:
Pictures, treats, a note,
and something special from his boy.

A few days later the soldier heard
someone call his name:
"The mail has come, there's a package for you,"
the mailman politely explained.
The first thing the man did
was read the untidy note,
and his heart was filled to bursting
when he read what his son had wrote:

Dear Daddy,

I know it's hard to be brave,
when we're so far away,
but I hope you know we pray for you
each night and every day.
I've also sent you something dear,
you need it more than me.
It will comfort, cure and encourage you
even while you sleep.

Because it is filled with mommy's love
and all of my love too,
when you snuggle up with it
you'll feel us there with you.
You may even dream you're coming home
in a hot air balloon!
Carried for a nightly visit
by this blankie, soft and blue.

Yes, you'll dream of us each night you sleep
in that far and distant land,
and like you said, before you know
you'll be back home again.
